So I've always wanted to make a music blog, and here we are! With time to spare (well... not really but we'll go with it) and things to say, I thought I might end the old year and start the new by creating a space for me to rant and rave about the music of the world. Hence, Frenchman Street Radio.
Questions? Comments?
Ah the title. Frenchman Street is a street of clubs and bars in one of my favorite cities, New Orleans. I thought it might be appropriate, because Frenchman Street is one of the few places I'm aware of where you can wander into just about any club, and have no idea what music you might discover. In one club, you'll find the Sierra Leon's Refugee AllStars, an African reggae band (more on them later), downstairs, and go upstairs and find a Washboard Chaz Blues Trio. (instruments: washboard, harmonica, guitar. No amps, no drums. Awesome. The lead dude is the spitting image of every aging bluesman you might have seen on some PBS documentary at 3 in the afternoon on a Tuesday. You can imagine his delight at discovering a bunch of 20-somethings dancing to his music one night last summer. Anyway...) I'd like to think you'll find some of that spirit in this blog. One day, talking up Woodstock country singers, and the next, raving about white Florida indie rappers who sometimes sound like Leonard Cohen.
My friends will join in, too.
And since I make the blog, and I've never been big on sticking to such silly things as "What you said you were going to write about.", I'll probably deviate from time to time into food, politics, religion, movies, etc. from time to time.
That's what I got so far. So as Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez might have said, "I can't recall how I had planned to end this blog." So I will end. Top 10 albums of 2009 coming up soon.
